Minutes of July 9, 2005 CAGP Quarterly Meeting

Attending: Alan Burns, Len Clemmer, Gregg Jocoy, Kathryn Kuppers, Brian Staton, Nick Triplett

1. Kathryn proposed that the CAGP give her discretion to sign the CAGP on to all future letters submitted by the Nuclear Information Resource Services (NIRS). This proposal was approved. A vote to approve the most recent NIRS letter was taken and passed with unanimous support.

2. Alan Burns reported that the current CAGP checking account balance was $1107.19, with two checks totaling $140 not cleared yet.

3. Nick read the minutes of the April/2005 meeting.

4. A proposal to continue to pay Michael Sharpe to update the CAGP website was approved, but the amount was reduced to $100 every three months since meetings are now only quarterly instead of monthly.

5. Gregg explained a plan to publish an eight-page primer about the current state of affairs in the nuclear industry, especially at the Savannah River Site and nearby facilities, so that Carolinians can be informed about the big new push for a whole complex of new plants and research facilities in the area.

6. In response to Duke Energy’s proposal for a new nuclear power plant on Lake Wylie, Kathryn suggested that the CAGP try placing a few classified ads in the Charlotte Observer real estate section to the draw attention of home-buyers to the risks involved in living near nuclear power plants. Gregg said he would write such an ad.

7. Brian and Nick will speak at the August 9th Mecklenburg County Commissioners Meeting, urging county action to alleviate climate change.

8. Nick and Brian will also speak at the Sixth Annual Social Justice Conference in October, 2005, whose focus will be racism. The CAGP is a sponsor of this event.

9. The CAGP Fall stream clean-up will be the first Saturday in November at 1:30 PM.

10. The CAGP will look into distributing information from Mecklenburg County on its waste reduction programs such as composting and rain barrel use. We could thereby provide a valuable public service and, at the same time, publicize the goals of the Green Party.

11. It was agreed that the CAGP will participate in the Dilworth Jubilee this coming September.

12. The next meeting will be Saturday, October 2nd, 2005, at 1528 Thomas Avenue.
