Minutes of January 13, 2007 CAGP Quarterly Meeting
Attending: Alan Burns, Len Clemmer, Bill Glass, Susie Glass, Kathryn Kuppers, Harry Phillips, Nick Triplett, Susan Triplett (with Owen).
1. Alan reported a bank balance of $383.30 and repeated a request for a volunteer to replace him as treasurer.
2. A discussion of the January 10 NC Utilities Commission hearing led to the conclusion that CAGP members should write letters opposing the Cliffside expansion before January 18, and that The Charlotte Observer should be reported to FAIR (fairness and accuracy in reporting) for their misleading coverage of the Charlotte hearing where more than 225 persons showed up to oppose the expansion.
3. Harry Phillips will begin to draw up a list of local progressive groups, along with brief descriptions and contact information, to post on the CAGP website.
4. It was decided that details of the upcoming Washington, DC peace demonstration will be put up on our website.
5. The CAGP will be a sponsor of the nationwide "Step It Up" campaign, whose goal is to focus attention on the problem of Global Climate Change. We will conduct a petition drive on April 14, 2007 (the day of action for the "Step It Up" campaign). We will present these petitions to the Charlotte City Council at a subsequent Council meeting, where CAGP members will once again encourage the City Council to take action to curb climate change. The petition drive will occur over a period of a few hours in the middle of the day on April 14, and our base of action will be one of the covered picnic facilities at Freedom Park. Kathryn will reserve the facility.
6. There will be a planning meeting for this Step-it-up event at 2 PM on February 3, 2007 at the Dilworth Playhouse Coffee Shop on South Blvd (next to the Elder Arts building).
7. The Campaign School will most likely be postponed to May of 2007, or possibly later because the GPUS speakers will not be available in March.
8. It was decided that the CAGP should be come a participant and supporter of the Martin Luther King Parade in downtown Charlotte beginning next year.
9. The 2007 annual CAGP meeting for electing new officers will be held at Freedom Park on April 14 either before or after, or even in the middle of, the Step-it-up petition drive. Exact time will be determined later. Yearly dues amount will be set at this meeting, and dues for the upcoming April 2007-April 2008 year are due at this meeting.
